New year, new iPhone. Following the annual tradition, Apple is expected to launch its new product lineup for 2024. The most anticipated release is the new generation iPhones, possibly the iPhone 16 series. The smartphone lineup is speculated to be unveiled in fall 2024, with a September launch. And alongside the anticipation, leaks and rumours surrounding the iPhone 16 are already circulating all over the internet.
Speculations suggest that with the new iPhone 16 series, Apple might expand the display size, upgrade internals with the latest Apple Silicon, and enhance the camera system significantly. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to inherit the 5x telephoto camera currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Moreover, both Pro models are anticipated to introduce a dedicated “capture button” for swift video recording. Leaks also hint at the possibility of a new colour option being introduced with the 2024 iPhone.
Let’s take a detailed look at what is expected with the upcoming iPhone 16 series.
What can we expect with the iPhone 16 series?
Design: Unveiling potential designs for the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, a recent MacRumors report revealed mockups based on internal leaks from Apple. According to the report, the iPhone 16 Pro could retain the design of its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro, with some significant changes. MacRumors suggests the new gen Apple’s smartphone line up will witness increased screen dimensions, expected to have slightly larger dimensions in terms of height and width compared to their predecessors. The expanded size of the devices is also speculated to offer Apple more internal space for various components. This potential upgrade might also led to integration of larger, longer-lasting batteries in the iPhone 16 Pro models.
Additionally, Apple is also rumoured to add a capacitive Capture button. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman describes this as “a new dedicated button for taking video.” MacRumors further clarifies that this button will be flush with the iPhone’s frame, distinct from the volume and power buttons. While these prototypes might not be the final form, it’s highly likely that the actual Pro models will closely resemble these mockups.
New colour: In terms of build, leaked information suggests that Apple will maintain the use of Grade 5 Titanium, the material currently used in the iPhone 15 Pro, for the construction of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. While rumours hint at a potential new colour option, specific details remain elusive – MacRumors’ reports further revealed the potential introduction of new colour for the iPhone 16 Pro. Additionally, speculations about display improvements abound.
Display: Reports are also indicating that the iPhone 16 Pro (codenamed Diablo) will feature a 6.3-inch display, while its bigger sibling, the iPhone 16 Pro Max (codenamed Lightning), will sport a 6.9-inch screen. If this happens, this change will mark a departure from the iPhone 15 Pro’s 6.1-inch display and the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 6.7-inch screen. MacRumors also theorised that this size expansion could be a strategic adjustment to accommodate the anticipated new camera features.
Camera: The upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models are rumoured to boast significant camera upgrades, including an innovative “tetra-prism” telephoto lens that will enable a 5x optical zoom for exceptional close-up photography. Moreover, these phones are said to sport a substantial upgrade in the form of a 48MP ultrawide camera, marking a notable leap forward from the current 12MP sensor found in the iPhone 15 Pro models.
Processor: Coming to performance expectations, leaks suggest the iPhone 16 could be powered by the A18 series chips. While the vanilla iPhone 16 is expected to come with an A18 chipset, the Pro models could have the A18 Pro chipset variant. It is to be noted that all of these are just leaks and rumours, and Apple’s final reveal could be different.
