Kerala: A case of COVID-19 subvariant JN.1 was discovered in Kerala on December 8, according to official sources on Saturday.
The 79-year-old woman’s sample had tested positive for influenza-like illness (ILI) on November 18, according to the report. She also reported that she had recovered from COVID-19 and was exhibiting mild symptoms of the illness.
According to sources, more than 90% of COVID-19 cases in India are currently mild and are getting treated at home.
An Indian traveller was previously detected with the JN.1 subvariant in Singapore. The individual was from Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirapalli district and had arrived in Singapore on October 25.
Following the detection of strain, there was no increase in cases in Tiruchirapalli district or elsewhere in Tamil Nadu.
“No other case of JN.1 variant has been detected in India,” the source said. The JN.1 sub-variant, which was discovered in Luxembourg and has since spread to other countries, is a descendant of the Pirola variant (BA.2.86).
According to a PTI report, it contains a significant number of unique mutations, particularly in the spike protein, which may contribute to increased infectivity and immune evasion.
