Shreyas Iyer scored his maiden Test century on his debut against New Zealand in Kanpur on Friday. He became the 16th Indian batter to reach the three-figure mark on Test debut. Iyer was eventually dismissed on 105 by Tim Southee.
Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed on 50 while Wriddhiman Saha fell on 1. Earlier, Iyer had remained unbeaten on 75, while Jadeja scored his fifty in the second-last over of the day as India finished Day 1 on 258/4.
Opener Shubman Gill had also scored a half-century (52) earlier in the day. Stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane had opted to bat after winning the toss.
