In a tragic incident, a 12-year-old boy drowned while trying to click a selfie near Sirukalur waterfalls on Kalvarayan hill in the Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu. The incident took place on Sunday morning. The boy has been identified as Suresh Bhuminathan, a resident of Vanapuram village in Thiruvannamalai district.
As per the reports of news agency, the boy unexpectedly slipped on a rock and got washed away while clicking a selfie with the waterfalls in the background. His friends called Sankarapuram fire station personnel and Kariyalur police after which rescue operation was launched. But, unfortunately, the boy couldn’t be traced.
Notably, Tamil Nadu has been reeling under rains, with heavy downpours in Chennai and other northern districts such as Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Vellore.
A total of five people were killed in rain-related incidents and over 60 houses suffered damage as incessant downpour created havoc in the city. In an official statement, the Tamil Nadu government confirmed that five lives were lost in rain-related incidents in Chennai and other districts—Theni and Madurai in the past 24 hours. Besides, 538 huts and 4 houses were damaged across the state.
Meanwhile, the met department has predicted more showers for the state. “Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over some parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on November 10 and 11 which may inundate roads and low-lying areas, and cause riverine flooding in some catchment areas,” the IMD bulletin said.
