Former India skipper MS Dhoni bid farewell to international cricket with an emotional video on Instagram on August 15. He will undoubtedly leave a huge hole in the senior national team, especially when it comes to the ICC events. However, as per former Pakistan speed merchant, Shoaib Akhtar, there’s still one way which could see Dhoni play the 2021 T20 World Cup.
Akhtar has been an active cricketing guru on social media platforms. He regularly keeps sharing his opinion on the raging matters of the sport through his YouTube channel. After hearing Dhoni’s decision to call time on his career, Akhtar opined that Dhoni still had the ability to continue playing the shortest format for India.
“I think he could have played T20 cricket, he could have gone on to play the T20 World Cup. And the way India supports its stars, the way they love them and recognizes them, they would have played him in T20s. But it was his personal choice,” he said while speaking to a YouTube channel ‘BolWasim’.
Dhoni remains the only captain to have won all three ICC trophies – T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy – a feat that will be incredibly difficult to achieve. The Rawalpindi Express highlighted such feats as he said: “But again he has won everything, a person from Ranchi has rocked the whole of India, what else do you need. At the end of the day, the world should remember you. And a nation like India, they will never let you get forgotten”.
One request that probably ever Dhoni fan has from the cricketing system is to conduct a farewell game for the 39-year-old so that they can say goodbye to him in a proper manner. Akhtar too echoed these sentiments as he opined: “India will be geared up to give him a farewell game, trust me. If he doesn’t want it, it is a different thing, but India will be ready. The whole stadium will be booked for him to play a couple of T20 matches and then go after that”.
